Shadow drain

Shadow drain is the most feared illness. The cause of Shadow drain is unknown. Speculations are from stories that say it is brought on by a animal bite, exhaustion, weak immune system, or all three. No theory has been proven wrong or correct as to date. Symptoms start with not hungry and high fever. With in two days of start of symptoms the infected person starts vomiting. With in the week the person will experience loss of magic ability and blindness. If not treated shadow drain will lead to permit blindness and magic loss. On the very rare occasions, the elderly and infants, it can lead to death. The treatment of Shadow drain is by using a purple Ferrine stone and medical herbs that are only found high up in the mountains is the southwest of Owhua. Because of this even though they are rare that is one of the first things a medic owns is a purple Ferrine. Shadow drain will become worse if it is left alone, or it will accelerate the symptoms if magic is used. Because of this illness most people will not use magic to heal unless it is an injury. The first record of shadow drain was in a village named, Dewvault, at the base a mountain in Owhua. Two men who had been traveling through the area fell ill and a local took them in. After two days as they continued to get worse the local took them to their village medic. The village medic tried to cure them with magic but only made it worse. Everything that the medic tried didn’t work. Finally after a month one of the men died the second was continuing to decline. The medic went deep into the mountains to find a rare plant that had medical properties. Once the medic returned the man was close to death, but the medic used this herb and applied it using a handed down purple Ferrine stone. An hour later the man started to get better by the next week he was able to sit up. He permanently lost his eyesight but his magic ability returned slowly. The man was unable to tell what happened to cause him and his companion to get sick. With in that same year there were similar illness that happened other places in Owhua, then on Lafliuton, next Nucrana and lastly Efren. It took many years before the cure which the Dewvault medic had found was spread to the other continents. By that time there were many who were left blind and magic less and many more dead. Once it was found the village Dewvault became the jumping off point into the mountains to get the much sought after healing herb. Sadly that herb is only available for a short time each year. Shadow drain is now better understood but still greatly feared especially those not on Owhua, also if not close to a major city or trading town as the herbs are hard to come by.
