Initiative
OPTION 1: Regular Initiative
Everyone rolls prior to every combat scene.PRO's:
- Organized combat
- Easy to understand
- No changes needed to play format
CON'S:
- Slow
- Narrative to action transition is bogged down
- Players disengage when it's not their turn
OPTION 2: Pre-rolled Initiative
All players roll initiative at the beginning of the session and immediately following each combat scene. Each combat scene will use the last initiative rolled.PRO's:
- Combat remains organized
- Narrative to action transition is smoother
- No changes needed to play format
CON'S:
- Rounds are still slow
- Players may still disengage during other turns
- Transition out of action is slowed
OPTION 3: Popcorn Initiative
The first strike of each combat scene will be determined narratively, and each player will nominate the next person to strike following their turn. Players are not obligated to nominate the same person following each turn in a given scene.Players, NPC's, and monsters can jump in and volunteer to take the next turn. Should multiple players volunteer, the player who's turn just ended will decide who takes the next turn.
DM will act as moderator and log each player's activity each round to ensure every player has equal opportunity.
PRO's:
- Narrative to action transition is smoother
- More opportunity for roleplaying/getting in character
- Players will be more engaged in each other's actions and can coordinate their attacks
CON'S:
- Much more disorganized
- DM will need to interrupt or assign NPC's to players for NPC turns
- Possibility of players speaking over each other and/or being/feeling left out
