The Northern Campaign

After nearly 350 years of rule over the southern portion of Uces, Aurelian emperor Vasilios Morelis took his army north of the then Aurelian states of Sarves and Nyrasia to conquer the remaining independent factions.

The 43 year long campaign was fraught with problems from the beginning. The empire's well-trained standing army was not prepared for the guerilla-style warfare of the northern Ucesians. Empirical records that survive show an average death ratio of 4 Aurelian deaths for every 1 Ucesian death.

The army was also not prepared for the long, barren winters near the north sea. Supply lines were not well established at the beginning of the conflict, and were slow to be reinforced. During the first winter near the frontlines, thousands of aurelian troops succumbed to malnutrition, hypothermia and other temperature related illnesses.
The wet winter has chilled our campaign to the bone. We sit still and silent afraid to lose an ounce of heat. Neither Filipp nor I have a morsel between us, and haven't for the last day and three before that. I don't think he'll make the night.
-Letter Home, Unknown Soldier
The campaign quickly became unpopular with Aurelian citizens. By the end of the first decade, the Aurelian army had begun phasing out live soldiers in favor of Warforged soldiers. With the exception of the command chain and support staff, nearly all Aurelian ground forces were warforged by the 15th year of the war.

While the Warforged brought Aurelian casualties to nearly zero, they were expensive to make and repair, and materials were increasingly scarce. Eventuallly, the Army began going town to town confiscating materials and conscripting laborers. This once again turned public favor against the war and led to the formation of multiple underground sabotage groups, the largest of which was called The Shadow.

The campaign came to a close with the fall of the Aurelian Empire.
