The Stars
The stars are the souls of all those who lived before, returned to the skies to watch over the world now. Every star is the soul of someone that has passed on. Just as in life, they wander, traversing the skies year round. But they always come back to where they started each season, so that those below may find them and look to them for guidance. The stars are used not only for literal guidance- navigation- but to ask for help in life.
Everyone who lives in the world will become a star when they die. Not all will be bright enough to see, though. Those who were great sorcerers will be the brightest and are the ones most looked to for guidance. Many people and families gather together in the sky that they might be seen from the ground, gathering generations of knowledge in one place. The point of life is to gather knowledge and stories and to better the world around you. Then, when you pass on, you bring all of that with you to the stars and you can share what you have learned with those before. They tell you of existence above, and you tell them of existence below.
All of the stars have names and histories. Everyone knows where to look to find their ancestors or their loved ones; certain seasons are more sacred to certain people, as that is when their stars are visible or easier to be seen.
It may seem inverted that those most involved with sorcery, or shadow, will become stars that burn the brightest. This is because the stars do not actually give off light. On nights where the moons are black, there is little to no light, even though the stars are visible. It is simply that they are a lighter colour than the pitch black of the night sky and so they stand out. It is like dropping grey stones onto dark dirt; the stones do not give off light, but because of the contrast, they are more visible. They are not visible during the day because the sun's light obscures them. Powerful sorcerers are brighter and more visible because a star's size is based off of the amount of energy and connections a person had when they died. A regular person has only their own energy and life, and may not have enough to be visible in the sky. This is why people gather together to be seen. The strong connections between them increase the energy. But a sorcerer spends their whole life working with and increasing their own reservoirs of energy. They are deeply, intimately connected to the world around them. They can create radical changes in the world and are able to store that power inside of themselves. It has to go somewhere when they die; much of it is released back into the world, but it also goes with them to the sky and creates a much larger star. Those who died as Thralls become stars as the people they once were, though their energy is weak. Finding others in the sky to gather with is a healing process for them. Those who died as Magicians do not become stars- they completely cut themselves off from the world, and their energy was forcibly created rather than grown. No one knows what happens to a Magician when they die.
