Avian Artians

Basic Information

Anatomy

Avians are a hybrid of owls and humans. The wings and arms are one and the same and they have claws instead of fingers on the tips of their wing bone. The torso is the same as human anatomy but covered with small feathers. They possess large, forward-facing eyes and ear-holes, a flat face, and usually a conspicuous circle of feathers, a facial disc, around each eye. The feathers making up this disc can be adjusted to sharply focus sounds from varying distances onto the Avians' asymmetrically placed ear cavities. Most birds of prey have eyes on the sides of their heads, but the stereoscopic nature of the Avians' forward-facing eyes permits the greater sense of depth perception necessary for low-light hunting. Although Avians have binocular vision, their large eyes are fixed in their sockets so they must turn their entire heads to change views. Avians females are larger than males.

Genetics and Reproduction

Avian males are smaller because it allows them to be efficient foragers. The ability to obtain more food is advantageous during the breeding season. Avian females stay at their nest with their eggs while it is the responsibility of the male to bring back food to the nest.

Ecology and Habitats

Avians build their nest in Arichost Trees, strong enough to support their big nests. An Avian nest is as large as a regular house with 2 rooms and a kitchen. They make sure tho that they respect the forest they live in.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Avians hunt small birds, which are agile, are an important source of food for Avians. They also eat insects and small rodents such as mice, rats, and hares, and variates with fish.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

As Avians are farsighted, they are unable to clearly see anything within a few centimeters of their eyes. Caught prey can be felt by Avians with the use of filoplumes—hairlike feathers on the beak and feet that act as "feelers". Their far vision, particularly in low light, is exceptionally good. Avians can rotate their heads and necks as much as 270°. Avians have 14 neck vertebrae compared to seven in humans, which makes their necks more flexible. They also have adaptations to their circulatory systems, permitting rotation without cutting off blood to the brain: the foramina in their vertebrae through which the vertebral arteries pass are about 10 times the diameter of the artery, instead of about the same size as the artery as in humans; the vertebral arteries enter the cervical vertebrae higher than in birds, giving the vessels some slack, and the carotid arteries unite in a very large anastomosis or junction, the largest of any bird's, preventing blood supply from being cut off while they rotate their necks. Other anastomoses between the carotid and vertebral arteries support this effect.   Avians are able to fly silently in order to catch their prey.

Common Dress Code

They use cannabis hemp to make cloth fiber. Therefore their colors are mostly white. Different colors considered of more value.
The traditional Avian clothing for women has a piece of bluestone jewelry necklace connected to a hip and brassiere made of leaves and white hemp cloths, colorful stones and mud pearls show their class.
The Traditional male Avian clothing is hemp loincloth and necklace with colorful stones and mud pearls.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Avian culture is complex. They are most tolerant of other species but will be bloodthirsty killers if you get to close to their nests. Because of these facts, the airborne city of Cidade Aérea is a restricted area forbidden to practice nesting. Avian children are raised apart from other avian children until they reach the age of twelve, and the schooling in Cidade Aérea begins.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Some Avians keep the same partner all their life, but for those who don't, the culture of divorce is greatly accepted.

History

The Avians has an unknown origin. Themself say their ancestors came to Certos by a portal from another world in about 1600 BF in a place themself refers to as Altura árbore, High Tree. When asked where Altura árbore is, they say an island in the west. Angel Rift is located further south of the pirate island Rapstavik. The Avians landed on the Angel Rift Islands on their expedition to the east in about 1450 BF and lived in the fortress on the main island Angeltura in peace for thousands of years. Their attentiveness and tolerance toward other races made them lose their home when it was taken over by the Dreorish tribe Albahir. When they left the natural enemies of the Avians, the intelligent centipedes and dark shriekers took possession of the ruins beneath the fortress. By this time the Avians had built their own airborne city, Cidade Aérea, above the Angel Rift Dungeon.
