Sirung Lighthouse

The Sirung Bay, despite being the closest harbour to Mistval and the east, is not Droden's most used port, for good reason. The rocks around the island of Sirung itself are vicious, and the currents around the bay are troublesome to navigate for the uninitiated. Thus, modeled after a similar structure at Limago, a lighthouse was constructed to guide ships safely into the harbours on Kember and Galama, or past the rocks to the major ports further on in Droden. The lighthouse is often the first thing travellers from the east see of Droden, and stands as a reminder that the nation is committed to making the Inner Ocean a safe place to travel and trade.

Purpose / Function

The lighthouse is designed as a way of indicating the location of the rocks around the Sirung Bay which is visible even at night or in thick fog. A small fire at the top of the tower provides light, which is then reflected in a series of metal panels to produce four rays of light which shine across the sky, something which no navigator can miss. The light that points inland is shone through a sheet of tinted glass, turning it red and thus giving ships which may be off-course a way to reorient themselves.

Alterations

The container which reflects the fire's light was a recent addition, greatly improving the visibility granted by the tower. In addition to that, steel rods have been installed in the base in order to stabilise the lighthouse against earthquakes, as the Kember earthquake in 1038 caused major damage to the lighthouse's foundations.

Architecture

The lighthouse is made of the red-brown granite found on Hagnao and is constructed in three tiers. The lowest level consists of two circular areas, one providing living quarters for the lighthouse's operators and the other being the base of the lighthouse itself. The second tier is the main tower, which inside is a straight cylinder, but outside slopes inward for improved stability. The interior contains storage for fuel and various pieces of equipment needed to maintain the light system. The topmost level is the beacon itself, in a small room with the fire and mirrors raised a metre or so off the floor, such that they can be tended to without risk of interrupting the light.
