Covrin Wars

During the late 8th century Covrin was growing increasingly concerned about the increasing power and capabilities of the Moran Duchy from a combination of itv control of the upper waters of the River Cor and the fact that the assimilation of the Houghlands into the Duchy meant that it was increasingly surrounded by a Duchy who was also developing naval power and threatening to control Corbay. As tension increased minor naval actions in the bay became more common and border skirmishes erupted on the shared border. These escalated during the 780’s and erupted into more continuous warfare in 793. This lasted until 800MD when war weariness and the pragmatic approach of Connor Tarra-Caddick brought an end to the war, with a number of uprisings against the ruling classes that had done so much to prolong it.

The Conflict

Outcome

The close of the war was marked by a number of uprisings against the ruling class which resulted in some fleeing to other lands to escape the violence meted out to many of their peers. Order was restored by the ongoing efforts of the Dutch armed forces under Connor Tarra-Caddick who rebuilt the economy over the following decade.

Aftermath

The reconstruction of the provinces after their conquest was an outstanding success which did much to enhance the reputation of Connor Tarra-Caddick and popularise some of his policies elsewhere in the Duchy. Coffin was split into three Tithings which were granted considerable autonomy and over the following century became one of the more prosperous parts of the Duchy despite the decline in the fishing and whaling grounds of Corbay.

Historical Significance

Legacy

This was the last major conflict in the northern parts of Tarusia - the fate of the ruling classes of Covrin being a salutary reminder of the risks of warfare to ruling groups. The Duchy has since shown no further designs on expansion and the [Little Kingdoms, though they feud with each other as they have since their foundation have no desire to “twist the dragon’s tail”.

Objectives

To prevent the border skirmishes and piratical acts carried out or sponsored by the Covrin rulers.
To curb the growth in power of the Moran Duchy, which had come increasingly to dominate both their borders and access to Corbay.

Forces of the Moran Duchy

At the beginning of the war the Duchy forces were largely built around the tithing militias - oganisations that had existed back to the earlist days of the Duchy and which were more prepared for local defence than campaigning. With the border skirmishing that had been growing in intensity in the latter half of the 8th Century, the militias of Harborough and Morsby had become proficient in small scale actions close to their bases but were unprepared for longer term campaigning.   The Covrin Wars were notable for the first use of Atmospheric Projectors, though their first performance and tactics for their use fell some way short of more modern expectations.

Forces of Covrin

The forces of Covrin were essentially split between the nobility (generally in positions of command though there was a strong tradition of their serving at least briefly in the ranks) who sponsored and lead mounted troops and the mass of conscripted commoners. In the first part of the war they also made use of mercenries from the Little Kingdoms though as the economic condition of Covrin declined they increasingly ceased to serve, often becoming a curse on the lands they had previously fought on behalf of.   This and the increasing burden on the mass levies resulted in the collapse of support for the ruling class and their overthrow which brought the end of the wars in 800MD.
