Naros Length Measure

The units of measure used in the Naros Archipelago are the closest thing that Challaria has to a world standard, but although they are widely used in many places, different areas and cultures often retain their own measures out of tradition and to cause confusion. The reference is a series of gold measures held by the Merchant Mages, who will sell to any bronze copies at a cost of 10% above scrap value.   Land measure is based on the stride - the distance between consecutive footfalls of one foot or other. Thus "Left - Right - Left" is one stride. 12 strides make a chain, 12 chains make a length, 12 lengths a walk (as this is around half an hour's walk) and 12 walks a day 's walk.   A square chain is a plot, a square length is a land (the usual unit of commerce and farming). Depending on the quality of the land, 12 lands are usually reckoned to be sufficient to feed a family and this area is referred to as a holding.   For shorter use, for cloth for example, "arm measure" is used with the main unit being the span, the length grasped between outstretched arms. This is subdivided into 2 arms each made up of 10 fists (the length across the knuckles - about 3 inches, each of which are made up of 4 fingers).   Although the measures were originally independent (through closely related through body size) the standardised length set by the Merchant Mages have 21 fists to the stride.

Colloquial usage

Given the use of the Fist as a measure, it is no surprise that someone beaten up is said to have been given an arm, or a span depending on how heavy the beating was. This is not a direct count of the punches .
