Egghead Institute -- Moonsville

[Prompt: A building or landmark used for, or associated with, communication]   This article exists primarily as a way for me to work out how this building needs to change in light of other worldbuilding I've done since I last touched it... and whether it still needs to exist at all.   First impression is that I at least want the shell (heh) of the Institute to exist. It may change its purpose ENTIRELY from its original conception, but the building itself will remain, someplace, sometime.   That established, let's recall some worldbuilding details. --------------------   From what I remember, the Egghead Institute was going to be one part college, one part protective wall around a portal that naturally sprang up between Somewhere, Illinois and Moonsville. That was how people got to Moonsville in the first place. Then I declared The Commonplace to be omnidimensional and established in Moonsville, so we have another way for people to get there. So I guess the Egghead is obsolete now? (Aside: Somewhere was/is to be my Tomniverse-Earth replacement for Normal, Illinois. Within the city is a massive, dying mall transplanted from another real-life city in Illinois, though I have to re-track down the names.)   Actually, no, I don't think we have to do that. I don't want to. I prefer the idea that Moonsville was founded from a simple, stable, two-way portal to Earth, Hello From the Magic Tavern style. We could say, quite easily, that Percy set up shop in Moonsville because he was fascinated by that portal, and created a second way for Earthens to potentially get to Moonsville. Earthens (and not just from that mall), and adventurers from any other world that wandered out the Moonsville door.   Okay, that simplifies things a bit! This building still exists, basically with its original purpose intact. The Institute is here to guard the portal and make sure those going through it are documented and regulated to some degree.   From that, I think the idea of study and communication spring quite organically. Naturally, people are gonna wanna do science on the portal, explore both sides, send letters between the different worlds. At one point, a bunch of pigeons stumbled through the portal and did their pigeon thing in the rafters of the Egghead. By the time people were finally able to catch some, the pigeons had multiplied, and created an established population. One Earth-native who became a permanent Moonsville resident recalled that pigeons had once been differentiated like dogs and used for different jobs. That person took it upon themself to repeat these projects, and create a network of messenger pigeons.   Olua has magic and access to the Message cantrip, but that spell only reaches 120 feet. Pigeons were more effective and more exciting than either magic or Earth cellular tech, so they became a staple of Moonsvillian communication.   And it all started at the Egghead Institute.   Fitting.
