Eclipse of the Shadowed Souls
Eclipse of the Shadowed Souls
7th-level necromancyCasting Time: 1 action
Range: 90 feet
Components: V, S, M (a shard of a mirror used at a funeral)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
You unleash the shadowed souls of the departed to torment one creature you can see within range. The target is enveloped in a swirling mass of ghostly figures, shrieking in agony. The creature must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, it is paralyzed with fear as it confronts the tortured souls. On a successful save, the creature is frightened but not paralyzed.
A creature paralyzed by this spell must make another Wisdom saving throw at the end of each of its turns. If it successfully saves against this spell three times, the spell ends. If it fails its Wisdom saving throw three times, its spirit is temporarily torn from its body and subjected to the ethereal plane for the duration. The successes and failures don't need to be consecutive; keep track of both until the target collects three of a kind.
While the creature's spirit is in the ethereal plane, it experiences visions of its past transgressions and fears, potentially gaining new insights or madness. The creature's physical body remains motionless and vulnerable during this time.
If the creature’s body is destroyed while its spirit is on the ethereal plane, it dies, and its spirit is lost forever.
The effect can be reversed within one year with greater restoration, wish, or similar magical effects. If the creature's spirit remains in the ethereal plane for one year and a day, the separation becomes permanent, and the spirit is doomed to wander the ethereal plane in eternal torment.
