Morrison's Maze of Mindwarps
Morrison's Maze of Mindwarps
8th-level illusion Casting Time: 1 actionRange: 150 feet
Components: V, S, M (a piece of labyrinthine etching on ancient parchment and a crystal prism worth at least 1,750 gp, which the spell consumes)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 hour
This spell creates a sprawling, illusory labyrinth that ensnares the minds of those within its bounds. When cast, the spell affects a 50-foot cube within range. This area becomes a maze of twisting corridors and shifting walls, visible only to those affected.
Each creature in the area, or that enters the area during the duration, must make an Intelligence saving throw. On a failed save, a creature becomes trapped in the maze. While trapped, the creature is considered incapacitated and is unaware of its surroundings, as it navigates the illusory labyrinth.
At the end of each of its turns, a trapped creature can make an Intelligence check against your spell save DC to discern the illusion and end the effect on itself. A creature that succeeds on its saving throw, or later discerns the illusion, perceives the labyrinth as translucent and can move freely, though the area is still considered difficult terrain.
The caster can manipulate the maze as a bonus action on their turn, altering its layout or creating illusory hazards (such as pits or dead ends). These changes can disorient creatures, causing those who fail a subsequent Intelligence check to lose their next action.
As a unique twist, once during the spell's duration, the caster can choose to cast themselves and others into a shared mental plane, represented by the labyrinth. This plane is a battleground for psychic combat or parley, where physical abilities are replaced by mental prowess. The rules of engagement in this shared mental space are governed by the caster, making it an ideal setting for mind games or extracting information.
Classes: Wizard, Warlock
Subclasses: Illusionist Wizard, Great Old One Warlock
Note: Morrison's Maze of Mindwarps is a complex spell suitable for high-level play in campaigns where mental and illusory challenges are prominent. It is not found in the SRD and should be introduced with consideration for its potential impact on game balance.
Source: Custom creation, inspired by the surreal and mind-bending narratives typical of Grant Morrison's work, integrated with D&D 5e mechanics.
