Whispers of the Ancients
Whispers of the Ancients
Level 4 Enchantment
Casting Time: 1 minute
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S, M (a skull fragment etched with arcane sigils)
Duration: 1 hour (concentration)
Description: With a guttural chant and a touch of the skull fragment, you sever the veil between worlds, tapping into the wisdom and memories of ancient spirits. A chorus of ethereal whispers washes over your target, a single creature within range. These whispers can either guide or beguile, depending on your intent.
Echoes of Guidance: Choose one willing creature within range. Until the end of the spell, the target has advantage on all Intelligence (Investigation), Wisdom (Perception), and Charisma (Persuasion) checks. Additionally, at the start of each of their turns, the target can whisper a question to the spirits, receiving a cryptic but insightful response as a telepathic message.
Illusions of the Past: Choose one unwilling creature within range. Until the end of the spell, the target becomes entangled in a spectral web of illusions, reliving traumatic memories or witnessing terrifying visions. The target has disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws and Dexterity saving throws against area effects. Additionally, whenever the target takes damage, they must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target is incapacitated for 1 round due to overwhelming fear and confusion.
At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the duration of the chosen effect increases by 1 hour for each slot level above 4th. Additionally, the target of Illusions of the Past takes an additional 1d4 psychic damage whenever they fail a Wisdom saving throw due to the spell.
Classes: Bard, College of Whispers Bard, Cleric, Druid, Ranger, Spirit Shaman (homebrew class), Warlock (Pact of the Chain)
Lore: Whispers of the Ancients echoes the ancient pacts formed between mortals and spirits, allowing you to harness the wisdom of forgotten souls or ensnare your foes in their own past terrors. This potent spell offers invaluable support for your allies, debilitating control over enemies, and even the potential for uncovering lost knowledge and secrets.
Notes:
This spell provides tactical and narrative flexibility, offering powerful buffs, debilitating debuffs, and potential information gathering. The choice of effect allows for adaptation to the situation and your party's needs. The upcasting potential extends the duration and adds additional damage to the Illusions of the Past effect. The mystical and lore-rich nature of the spell encourages creative roleplaying, tactical decision-making, and exploration of the hidden past.
