J3-11 The Gilded Lamp

Written by Adsmalley

This large and odd shaped building has a shop in the front that sells a wide variety of lighting supplies, such as: lamps, torches, candles, oil, and just about anything else that someone could want regarding their lighting needs. The owner of the shop is a short and heavy-set elderly lady that is always smiling and friendly. The local’s joke that Miss Riala Gilder could talk even the dourest person into a smile. Her living quarters are in the back of the building, along with a large storeroom. There is also a stair leading down to a cellar, which is used to store her supply of oils and other dangerous and flammable liquids. Her prices are fair, but have a considerable range, as she carries products that the poor can easily afford all the way to the highest quality oil-burning crystal chandeliers.   The building is three stories tall and constructed of large redbrick and mortar with a 6:12 pitch (~22° angle) roof of tile over heavy timber framing. The floors are all made of huge stone slabs that fit together very tightly to create a well-supported and very strong floor. There are several stone columns in the shop on the main floor to help support this heavy floor from below. There is a heavy wooden door in the short wall facing the street that runs diagonally (north-east to south-west) which opens up into a small entryway, from which a staircase leads up to the second floor. This stairway opens into a wide hallway with another stairway going up to another hallway on the third floor. Both the second and third floors have several small but well kept apartments that Miss Gilder rents out by the week or month to those willing to pay for them. While most of these apartments don’t have windows (only the two on each floor that are along the north and northwest walls of the building), they are well maintained and nicely furnished. While not extravagant, they have all the basic needs such as a small round table with 3 chairs, a small fireplace and cupboards with a small counter, bed, a small and functional armoire, a chamber pot, a washbowl and pitcher and other basic needs.   Return to the Channel Cities, Martelain or the J3 Black Swan District of Martelain.
