Dragonborn

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dragonborn are humanoids with draconic traits: scales, lizard tails*, and dragon-like heads.   *The presence of a tail varies from Dragonborn to Dragonborn, but tails are relatively uncommon.

Biological Traits

The scale colour of a Dragonborn depends on a combination of its direct ancestry and its parents. Unlike Dragons, however, colour (whether chromatic or metallic) does not effect alignment. It does, however, become a matter of stigma - especially in regions that were hardest hit during the Invasion. Metallic colours are preferred.

  Possible scale colours include:

Metallic

  • Brass
  • Bronze
  • Copper
  • Gold
  • SIlver

Chromatic

  • Black
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Red
  • White

Genetics and Reproduction

Due to their ancestry, Dragonborn are only capable of breeding with their own kind. A female typically lays a clutch of 3 to 4 eggs. She is also the sole caregiver, as males don't bother with child rearing.

Growth Rate & Stages

Dragonborn grow quickly. A hatchling can walk soon after hatching. A Dragonborn reaches adulthood at the age of 15. Due to their rapid maturation, Dragonborn over the age of 45 begin to grey and decline - often becoming vulnerable to senility, delirium, or acute arthritis.

Relationship Ideals

Dragonborn seldom mate for life. Males commonly leave females to raise young on their own. It is also common for a male Dragonborn to mate with several females in his reproductive lifetime.

History

It is believed that Dragonborn were created in 200 BI by Chromatic Dragons with the aim of creating foot soldiers for the coming Invasion. This, however, is subject to major disputes between scholars, historians, wizards, and representatives of the Dragonborn community. Was is known for certain is that Dragonborn soldiers were used during this era-defining conflict. While many Dragonborn surrendered when defeat became clear, some fled underground or beyond the seas harboring grudges and blood feuds.

In modern times, Dragonborn are like most cosmopolitan races (e.g. Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and Gnomes) and integrate well. Some have even found places on governing bodies or heads of churches.

Common Myths and Legends

Some Dragonborn believe themselves to be the descendants of Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Dragonborn often integrate into the societies of other races. They do, however, avoid enclaves that discriminate against chromatic members of their race. Interspecies relationships are frowned upon, but mostly tolerated. This may be due to the fact that Dragonborn are unable to interbreed with other races.
