Halflings

Basic Information

Anatomy

The defining feature of Halflings is their short stature - it's where they got their name. Halflings are hairy. Their disproportionally large feet are covered in hair and so are the back of their hands. Females are slightly less hairy, but only just.

Growth Rate & Stages

Halflings reach adulthood at the age of 20 and live well into two centuries.

Ecology and Habitats

Halflings are highly social creatures. They crave the company of their own kind and often form communities (sometimes called Shires). They can be found all over Chardovia both in hidden Shires or in enclaves in cities or towns.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Halflings are omnivorous - very omnivorous. They eat everything and they eat a lot. Halfling feasts are a thing of legend, making them natural friends of the Dwarves.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Halflings have strong familial ties.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Family names are important to Halflings as it reminds them of their strong familial bond.

Beauty Ideals

Halflings are similar to humans with regards to what they see as attractive in a potential mate. The only difference being that males with particularly hairy feet and backhands are considered as attractive. The opposite being true for females.

Gender Ideals

Halflings are what you might call 'traditional'. Heterosexual relationships are strongly favoured by Halfling society at large.

Relationship Ideals

Halflings have large families. A couple typically has an average of four to five children. You will not find a more loyal spouse (or friend for that matter) than a Halfling.

Average Technological Level

Halfling are generally simple folk. While they can learn to use any tool or technology, every Halfling secretly desires the simple existence of sitting in a rocking chair and smoking a pipe.

History

Halflings have had a peaceful existence in Chardovia. They generally keep to themselves and stay out of trouble. They leave the empire-building and adventuring business up to the other races. There are exceptions, of course, however, these are considered as anomalies. You will not find a more loyal friend or braver than a Halfling.

Some say that their bravery is due to a misunderstanding of the notion of 'danger'. In their safe and enclaved lives, Halflings are seldom presented with anything more threatening than a bumblebee.
