Dusable’s Masquerade: The Academic Odyssey of Professor Wilson Oswald

Dr. Wilson Oswald, curator of the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center and retired adjunct professor at the University of Chicago, is a leading scholar in African American cultural and spiritual history. A descendant of Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, the museum’s namesake, Oswald is deeply involved in preserving and interpreting African American heritage.

With a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago, an M.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Howard University, and a B.A. in History from Morehouse College, Oswald focuses his research on the spiritual practices of African American communities, particularly hoodoo and rootwork. His academic work explores these practices' roles in resistance movements and cultural resilience. His lectures, known for their depth and engagement, draw large audiences and stimulate vibrant academic discussions.

At the DuSable Museum, Oswald curates exhibits that highlight the spiritual dimensions of African American history, ensuring that presentations reflect the community's rich cultural and spiritual traditions. His collaboration with archaeologist Dr. Sarah Patel, particularly through the Chicago Archaeological and Cultural Heritage Society (CACHS), led to significant discoveries, such as hidden shrines in Bronzeville, which enriched both his research and the museum’s collections.

Operating from the museum’s sub-levels, Oswald manages a vast collection of artifacts and documents, mentoring the next generation of scholars. His work emphasizes the importance of spiritual and cultural heritage in understanding African American history, positioning the DuSable Museum as a critical academic resource.
