Alima, Dr. Haba Begum, a distinguished Egyptian religious scholar from Al-Azhar University, brings her profound knowledge of Islamic theology and commitment to progressive reform to Chicago. Born in Iraq and based in Egypt, she is a prominent voice in the global Muslim diaspora, known for her efforts to bridge cultural divides and advocate for gender equality within Islam.
 
Currently, Dr. Begum is spearheading the establishment of a cultural and academic exchange program between Al-Azhar University and the University of Chicago. Supported by influential Egyptian investors, her mission involves private consultations with key figures in academia, business, and the community to foster interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
 
With a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies and a Master’s in International Relations, Dr. Begum’s extensive academic and consulting experience is reflected in her numerous publications and awards, including the Global Scholar Award and the Peace through Dialogue Award. She is temporarily residing at the Four Seasons Hotel, with her engagements carefully managed by her aide and husband, Sir Richard Alston II, a former British diplomat. Together, they ensure her influence is strategically positioned within Western cultural spheres.
