When the Mountain Split Open

The day “When the Mountain Split Open” is remembered by The Golin infamy and with deep ire.   The Gol’s civilization, Thaigh Dural, was positioned on the west side of The Spine of the World, the isthmus that divides the known world; tucked away in the cavernous depths of the mountains there, the city had gone through most of the Age of Heroes in solitude and quiet, avoiding a great many conflicts and instead allowing the Gol therein to invest more time in cultural development. In fact, most civilizations then avoided crossing the isthmus as not only did a desert reside on the other side, but the Floating Mountains thereto crossed.   The floating mountains, as scholars now know, would only pass once every 10 years or so, but when they did so, they were known to drop some of the mountains they had carried there on that Isthmus and pick up the taller peaks of mountains to take with in on the long 10 year journey across the seas. One day, however, one of the largest floating mountains, Icari, dropped. This caused an earthquake from the force, causing Thaigh Dural to split in two, one of the halves crumbling into dust.   A great many people died from the earthquake, and much of the city went into chaos in an attempt to recover. Worse yet, their mineral wealth and location was all at once exposed to the surrounding political landscape, and they feared vultures of conquerors might feast their eyes and seek to claim the land for themselves.   Had it not been for The Heroes Guild’s exile from the Ievlen Empire after their war with The Carrion Crown , Thigh Dural may have indeed been a prospect for either the Ievlen Empire or the Crown City. Instead, however, The Heroes Guild, seeing the trouble of Thaigh Dural (And indeed, too, at their invitation) would help rebuild Thaigh Dural in return for The Heroes Guild’s protection of the city.
