Meredith Brandt

Meredith had joined the Lexicon ship to take human knowledge and ingenuity into the stars. She had been sure she could help found a place of learning whether it was spinning in a space station or under a dome on a hostile planet. And Eydan had been a deceptively tempting blue and green sphere, much in the same way Earth would have seemed to alien visitors.

Personal history

Meredith had encouraged the exploration of the planet but had tried to convince the bridge crew to abandon landing on the planet when they had seen signs of intelligent life and industry. Captain Harding had made the call to land. Meredith was sure if the ship had come in at the right angle, they would have been fine.

But the Lexicon had been heavier than the computers knew. Equipment and contraband samples from earth had been packed into every available space after her initial test flight.

The cargo was not just people and petabytes of information. It was a lexicon of life on earth. And the Lexicon dove through the atmosphere, only slowing as it took out trees on the way down.

Despite the crash and the Landing Sickness, humanity had survived and Meredith had built her University in orbit around an unfamiliar star. More literally than she had intended, raising walls and building chairs. But she felt accomplished.
