Aporeu chronicles Issue 7: Curse of the unfathomable
Stories from the adventurers
This week
All kinds of rumors are coming from the harbor and some adventurers went to investigate.Curse of the unfathomable
Today a group of adventurers took up a quest which was reluctantly posted at the adventurer’s guild. When they spoke to Lornan, the assistant to the Guildmaster they were told that there were a lot of rumors coming from the harbor district:People who had a nightmares, people who went sleepwalking, a missing fisherman, an entire ship with supplies which was overdue and was normally never late.
The group was told to find out what caused it, and stop the troubles if possible. They were also warned that, while the post was for bronze tier adventurers that was partly due to lack of information; If the threat was too great they are to report back!
The group went to speak with a fishmonger, Martha in the marketplace, who had reported her husband Bert who is a fisherman missing. He had been gone for a few days and she was very angry, she really thought he had run out on her, as he often spent nights at the Drunken Sailor anyway.
His friend Anders also spends a lot of time there and might know more.
Martha decided Bert did not have to return, and gave the Dwarf a wedding ring to give him if they find him.
The group then went on to the docks, but on the way there they encountered a child whose father had gone missing the day before… or so he claimed. It soon became clear that it was not in fact a child, but a halfling with nefarious plans, but after an attempt to steal a rapier from the group he ran off, and the adventurers let him go.
As the group went on to the Drunken Sailor they were given lobster soup, as a fisherman, Lars had captured the worlds largest lobster, but as he had to kill it to take it in it had to be eaten fast. Free soup!
It turns out that some of the people who were sleepwalking walked into the Drunken Sailor. The Gilded Gull was seen a week ago, when it should have arrived in town, heading away to the North East.
The adventurers spoke with Ander at the bar, who has been drinking a lot more since his wife left him, going out on a small fishing boat. However, he has been having nightmares, which is why he is drinking so much to suppress them. “The lake is eating them, I saw it in my dreams”. He also mentioned a thing in the deep, a huge black shadow with tentacles and a single huge, burning eye who wants Ander to go to the lake. Ander’s nightmares started a week ago.
The group then decided to go outside and hang around at the docks to see if any sleepwalkers would come by. Pretty soon 4 people did start stumbling towards the docks. The group intercepted them, and woke a few of them up to prevent them walking into the water. When the last one did reach the water some kind of lobster creatures came out and attacked!
A fight ensued, which the adventurers won, with the help of the citizenry, as well as some guards. However, during the fight some of the citizens started turning into lobsters themselves, after the lobsters knocked them down and looked at them.
One of them was taken alive to the temple of Umberlee, the Evil Goddess of the sea. A squalid exterior hiding a very lavish interior, with a lot of gold and silver sea-themed decorations. The priestess herself was seated on a shell-shaped throne.
Eventually she was persuaded to help the man with the lobster claw, and undid what was happening.
He then said that he had seen the burning eye as well, that he had heard “He belonged to him”, and that he felt a pull toward the lake.
After a night’s rest the group went to meet with the fisherman, Lars, to go along with his ship As they sailed so he could show them where he had trawled up the lobster, and then further on to the north east to see if they could find the Gilded Gull, the ship was attacked by a large wave washing over the ship, following by tentacles trying to grab the people who had fallen into the water, and some huge creature with a burning eye attempting to corrupt the cleric of the group. The dwarven smith got lobsterfied as well, but it luckily did not take well. Everyone was swiftly pulled out of the water, and the ship returned to the dock.
Going once again to the temple of Umberlee the group found that the priestess, smelling business, was hiking up the prices to help people, and now charged 100 Gp each for curing the sailor and the smith. She was persuaded to help the smith for a bottle of wine, and Lars will try to find the gold to help his friend.
The group then went back to the adventurer’s guild, taking the transforming sailor along to show what was happening. After their report they got rewarded and went back into town.
But a few streets out of the Adventurer’s Guild they were suddenly ambushed by the halfling they met the day before, who had pulled together some friends to teach them a lesson. A brief fight later, however, most of the thugs were dead. One, a wizard had gotten away and is currently wanted, and one surrendered and was persuaded to seek another line of work at the adventurer’s guild.
