The myth of the Jakalope traces its origins in the western half of Enask. Old Texts from the old Kingdom of Thenia, which ruled the region during the first age write about sightings of Lopes that have large dear horns on their head. The word Jakalope is a portemanteau of the Thenian word for deer "Jak" and "lope", which is the name of a specific Hare species that lives in the region.
However, while in the first age, they were considered a myth, the advent of soulbound magic and Shapeshifters changed that. It is widely known that all animal species that Shapeshifters can transform into are also present naturaly in the wild. The Jakalope is the only exception to that rule. Since the Myth's inception almost 4 millenia ago, a normal Jakalope living in the wild was never found. And yet, even if jakalope Shapeshifters are rare, they aren't too hard to find as they are mostly located in one specific region, which is nearly on the other side of the world, in Eastern Arros.
In fact, the vast majority of Jakalope shifters live in either the Kingdom of Heoria or the Kingdom of Naurcia either in small isolated communities or in the large cities of the region. They make a pretty good living by selling their fallen antlers to apothecaries or individual Alchemists each spring. Geographicaly, the region these two country are situated in is very far from Western Enask, where the myth originated. This means that not only does the animal not appear in the wild anywere, but even if they were, their shapeshifting counter-part aren't even born in that specific region were the animal is alredy present, as is the case with every other types, making the situation even more complicated.
This has left scholars all around the world baffled and divided, with some saying that the jakalope must exist since some can shapeshift into them, while other say that Jakalope shapeshifters aren't normal, which is either good or bad, depending on the individual scholar's opinion. Understandibly, Jakalope Shapeshifters are, like most soulmages, wary of helping, or interacting with scholars in any way, which is one of the reasons why the origins of these Shapeshifters remains so cryptic.
This article gets the brain going! I wonder if the Jackalopes were once real but are now extinct. Or maybe they're real but only exist in a secret land that's difficult to explore. I also keep imagining a sideshow attraction run by shapeshifter con artists selling the chance to see "Jakalopes". Very fun article!
Im glad you liked it! Jackalopes are a fun cryptid and i'm happy to have found a way to fit them in my setting. As Always, thanks for your nice comment!
