Noxshroom Trees

Deep within the Xejukan Wilds, under the thick canopee of massive tropical trees, strange plants trive despite the lack of sunlight. These plants are called Noxshroom trees, yet are neither trees, nor any other kind of plants.

Basic Information

Anatomy

At first glance, in its mature form, the fungus looks much like a tree. Large strong roots, planted deep into the ground, supports a tall and thick trunk. A teal-coloured cap sprouts over a light turquoise coloured trunk. The cap's underside glows a faint bluish light, that grows more powerful in the night. Strange twisty vines grow from there and downwards, like the branches of a willow tree. These vines contain sacks that when disturbed by being shaken or moved, burst open and liberate spores. These spores induces a acidic burn when coming into contact with skin.

Growth Rate & Stages

A few days after a spore takes root in a favorable environment, if feeds on the decaing mass around itself, until one day, it begins growing extremly fast, reaching a height of about 8-12 meters on average, and 15 metres at the highest. Reportedly, this fungus is able to grow to its full size tree form in less than 2 days, or about 40h, but it usualy takes at least 3 days. Only bamboo, a plant that originates from Osian, can come close in terms of growth rate.

Ecology and Habitats

Noxshroom trees trive in dark and humid environment. They are nearly always seen under the thickest part of the jungle's canopee and near stagnant of slow flowing water sources, like swampy rivers or marshy lakes, where decaying wood and plant matter is abundant.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

People in the Ak'aaran Confederation use noxshrooms for various purposes. Occomor trainers and chariot riders use noxshroom caps as food for the animals. The light a mature noxshroom makes it a popular potted decoration in some locations. The toxic spore vines are cut to prevent burns and are used to make a poison called the strangler. This poison, when consumed, enflames the mouth and throat, making the person unable to breathe.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Noxshroom trees are found in most regions of north-east Mahador, particulary in the Xejukan Wilds, the basilisk coast to the north east, and the Hydrask isles to the south east.

I love all the different uses for it, especially as a decoration. The poison sounds horrifying - I can literally feel an itch in my throat thinking about it.   I'm including this article in my August reading challenge. :)

Oh, thank you! And yeah, wouldn't want to get close to those vines!

Oh, I love mushroom trees, and this is a neat take on them! I like how they're kinda like willows. Neat work!
