Svekh on bread
Svekh on bread, most commonly known as just 'Svekh' is a traditional dish from the northern regions of Arros and consumed by the local Rumalians peoples. It is a purée made up of various veggies found in the area as well as butter, salt and occasionally chopped up Dagfar leaves, lathered on a piece of freshly baked rye bread.
History
The origins of this dish are unknown. However, its use as a signature dish of the winter solstice festival began during those times when Rumalians were raiding all over the North-eastern Arrosian coat along the Toskal and White seas. The raiders would return to celebrate the Winter Solstice festival before going back out again in January to keep raiding during the winter. Svekh was eaten during the festival and some was brought with them to be heated up atop a fire. Eventually Dagfar leaves were added to the recipe, possibly because of a potato blight that spread in the region, forcing people to use less appetizing turnips instead. to counter the sour taste, Dagfar leaves were added into the purée to make it sweater. However, because of the raretty of the leaves and the strange effects they had, this sweeter recipe was reserved for the feasts of the Winter Festivals.
The effects of the leaves are less strong when they are fresh, but even so, drowsiness is still common amongst those participating in the Winter Solstice feast.
Execution
In the communal kitchen of a Faldome, A fire is lit under a large cauldron. The potatoes, carrots and beets are cut and boiled together. Once the vegetable chunks are soft enough, the water is mostly removed and the veggies are mashed. While they are mashed, cut onions, Dagfar Flower leaves and salt and butter is added into the mix. Once the mixture is mostly homogenic, it is then served on rye bread, which is usually freshly baked.
Components and tools
A couple of cut beetroots, Potatoes and carrots. A handful of cut Dagfar leaves and Onions. A spoon of butter and a dash of salt.
A large cauldron, some water and a fire.
Observance
Regular Svekh on bread is eaten mostly during the fall and early winter months. However, Svekh with Dagfar leaves put in it is only eaten once, on the night of the Winter Solstice, at the end of the festival when every Faldome holds a feast for its inhabitants. This is partly because of the rareness of Dagfar leaves, its high price, even locally and because of cultural reasons related to its effects on people.
