Caliphate Infantry
The Caliphate Infantry, formally known as the Soldiers of the Divine Flame, was the general military force of the Caliphate of Ezir, prior to that country's reorganization into the Magocracy of Ezir.
The Caliphate Infantry was comprised of able-bodied Ezirandi men between the ages of fifteen and thirty years, trained in sword, spear, and shield. Some divisions of the Caliphate Infantry were trained in archery for ranged suppression, with either long bow or medium-weight crossbow depending on the distance needed.
Composition
Manpower
The Caliphate Infantry numbered 6,000 men at its peak during The Haphrises War, along with a support and logistics network of 2,000.
Equipment
Combat-trained soldiers used a leather lamellar cuirass with a padded helmet and hardened leather shield.
Weaponry
The Infantry typically used short spear with a one-handed khopesh or similar curved blade for close-quarters combat. Archery divisions used either long bows or medium-weight crossbows.
Vehicles
Officers in the Caliphate Infantry typically rode sleek Ezirandi horses or in chariots pulled by muscular Dunmaerik horses.
Structure
Overseen by the Divine General of the Caliphate Army, the Infantry was broken into six brigades of one-thousand men, plus three-hundred support and logistical staff, overseen by a Brigade General. Within each brigade are five legions of two-hundred men, overseen by Legion Commanders. Each legion is broken into four cohorts of fifty men, overseen by Captains. Cohorts are in turn broken into five ten-man units.
History
Originally formed as the Ezirandi Infantry Force, the Caliphate Infantry came into its own in the decades leading up to The Haphrises War. In 903 CE, the Infantry was partially incorporated into the First Bicameral Expedition with the Nation of Nuaira, to chart and explore the lands south of the Dunmaer Plateau (modern day Falcrest).
In the aftermath of Kethenica's Gambit, the bulk of the Caliphate Infantry was destroyed while on the field in Venidon; the sole survivors were the reserve held in at the northern border of Ezir.
The Caliphate Infantry was rebranded in the wake of The Haphrises War into the War Pigs by the Magocracy of Ezir, whose magic-wielding rulers considered infantry forces mostly useless, instead turning them into glorified guardsmen within the country's borders.
Historical loyalties
The Caliphate Infantry was historically loyal to the short-lived Caliphate itself, swearing fealty to the ideals of the country. In the modern era, their loyalty is to the mages that rule Ezir, though morale has decreased significantly.
