Chapter 2 - The Goblin Problem

After a night on The Capricorn, the party found themselves waking up in the lower decks of the ship. Out of curiosity, Alexandroth decided to talk to Captain Bonebreaker in her quarters. There, he found she put magical barriers around her ship. She gave Alexandroth a mission to retrieve a map from Port Royal at Herman's Horrendous Horrors shop. As they got there, however, Herman revealed that the map had been stolen by goblins and rats, a recent nuisance that has been plaguing the city. The party decided they were gonna use the map for themselves instead of Dana, and thus went off to find the map.   The party proceeded to head to a bar named the Busted Boot Inn, where they sequestered the bartender, Virgil, about the goblin problem. He pointed them to a homeless dwarf named Frili. After getting some food, they came across Frili near the Cathedral of the Divines. They bribed Frili with a silver piece and he led them to the sewer opening where he saw goblins leaving. Thus, the party entered.   Upon entering, the party were met with a gross smell of sewage. They proceeded to find goblins with glowing heads exposing the brain, setting up gun powder kegs. They picked off some of the goblins and took the gunpowder keg to blow open a secure door. Before this, they discovered a laboratory in the room, showing creepy diagrams of the goblins and rodents in strange lettering. The explosion led them to fighting a horde of goblins and rats as well as their leader, the Goblin King. Alexandroth proceeded to mutilate the Goblin King into submission and questioned him about the circumstances of their operations (much to Brynn's protest). They learned the goblins were brought to the island by a boat which they burned.   Eventually the party turned in the goblin ears they secured for a bounty, and they took the stolen treasure the goblins accumulated and kept it to themselves. Bogun explored a gun store, Alexandroth tried to sell a sapphire necklace from the treasure (but ended up giving it away as he learned it was a wedding gift stolen from that jeweler), and Brynn returned to the Inn to get some much needed rest.

Components

Moral Quandaries

When it came to dealing with the Goblin King, the party questioned whether killing him was the right resort for his crimes. Though Alexandroth felt killing him would get rid of the entire problem, Brynn noted that his death would be pointless since he had already been punished enough with the mutilation. After some persuasion, Alexandroth conceded and they left the badly injured Goblin King to live.

Relations

Protagonists

Brynn Inkheart

In this chapter, Brynn faced prejudice in the town of Port Royal, especially from the bartender Virgil. When delving into the sewers, her moral code was questioned by Alexandroth as she killed the rats. She noted that animals were different to kill than humanoids. In that fact, she was merciful toward the Goblin King.

Alexandroth Habsburg

Alexandroth displayed some more of his sinister side in this chapter. He proceeded to mutilate the Goblin King on means of completely eliminating the problem.

Bogun

Showing more of his heroic side, in battle Bogun got cornered by his enemies. However, a burst of his second wind proved him to be a capable fighter. When dealing with the Goblin King, he proceeded to side more with Brynn on whether to kill the poor creature or not.

Allies

Kevin the Sentient Squid Spear

Technically, it was a javelin. Regardless, Alexandroth proceeded to loot this spear and realized it became a sentient squid when thrown. Kevin proceeded to scream at the top of his lungs whenever he was thrown.

Neutrals/Bystanders

Dana Bonebreaker

The mysterious pirate captain was the one who sent the party on their way to Port Royal in order to retrieve the map. Otherwise, she didn't play much of a roll in the affairs.

Adversaries

The Goblin King

Leader of the group of goblins in the sewers, this leader had operated by stealing from the inhabitants of Port Royal for about a month. He began to notice his fellow goblins and rats getting their brains mutated to glow once they ate the cultist who hired them. He was evidently spared by the party, though led as a mutilated crippled until the end of his days.

Backdrops

Locations

The Sewers of Port Royal

A long and intricate system, the sewers of Port Royal are some of the most sophisticated systems in the world. Unfortunately, infestation of goblins in the last 10 months seemed to have lowered their standard of operation.

Herman's Horrendous Horrors

A tourist trap that doesn't get much business, Herman's Horrendous Horrors consists of wax works and artifacts that he swears are real, like a mummified mermaid and a shriveled goblin paw.

The Busted Boot Inn

The Busted Boot Inn is a common bar and inn for busy sailors in the city. They claimed to have the best chowder in the city (something verified by the party itself). However, it's owner Virgil is racist against tieflings. It also has two waiters: a gnome named Tenny (who the party paid generously) and an ugly elf named Denali.

Encounters

The Capricorn

Alexandroth found himself in a very dark room with Captain Dana, going against even his dark vision. It is where she gave him the orders to find the map. He tried to peer into her background, but he ended up failing.

Port Royal

The party came across a peddler on the streets that tried to sell them Port Royal sovereign coins. After getting through with him, they managed to find their way to Herman's Horrendous Horrors.

Herman's Horrendous Horrors

A wax museum filled with creepy artifacts, the party questioned Herman about the map and learned that it was stolen from him. He tried to make them pay for a tour, but they displayed no interest in that. He then told them about the "Treasure of Ages", a legendary horde of treasure.

The Busted Boot Inn

Here, the party found themselves chowing down on some delicious chowder. However, the Bartender, Virgil, seemed to have an issue with a blue tiefling customer, named Sober, who kept asking only to have water. Virgil displayed prejudiced feelings toward Brynn, to which she paid him two silver to pay for Sober and assured him that not all Tieflings were scoundrels. Alexandroth asked Virgil for any bounty postings, and he pointed them to the guard asking for goblin ears for 10 gold a piece. Alexandroth started getting sequestered by a drunken fighter who accused him of being a tax collector, but after some convincing, he settled down.

The Sewer Laboratory

When fighting the goblins in the sewers, the party came across a terrifying laboratory. The lab table had diagrams, written in a square-like text, detailing the examined bodies of rats and goblins. A dead cultist was found eaten alive, and they spotted a holy symbol of Ilsensine upon his body. Investigating the lab further they grabbed a enchanted Breastplate of Bouyancy.

Gunsmoke

Bogun proceeded to sell some extra gunpowder he got off of himself at a gun store. The owner, named Matthew, tried to sell him an experimental gun, but Bogun turned it down.

Freda's Jewelry

Alexandroth found a sapphire necklace from the Goblin King's horde and tried to sell it to the jeweler at this store. Coincidentally, the sapphire necklace belonged to her as a wedding gift. Feeling a prick on his conscience, Alexandroth turned over the necklace to her for no charge.
