Commonwealth Institute of Technology
Once Boston's premier university, CIT ends up being completely demolished at the end of the Commonwealth Faction War. It is the surface marker for the location of The Institute, though the majority of the surface peoples have not made the connection between the organization's name and the name of the ruin.
The ruin is occupied by a paltry force of Gen 1 synths, stationed there to deter hostile parties, such as Super Mutants, Gunners, or Raiders from occupying the ruin. It is also the default "beam-out" point for Institute surface operatives.
Purpose / Function
The original purpose of CIT was to serve as a higher education and research facility. It fulfilled this purpose up until the Great War, when it became a ruin.
It's purpose Post-War is primarily a navigational landmark.
Alterations
The main complex of The Institute was built underneath these ruins, but all surface entrances were eventually sealed off in 2186, upon completion of The Institute's Molecular Relay.
Architecture
The architecture of CIT takes inspiration from the Greek Pantheon temples, with a large Dome, called the Rotunda, overlooking a courtyard. Additional wings of the campus take on a more modern feel. Most of the building is made from reinforced concrete.
The building is in surprisingly good condition for its age and disuse, but areas of the western wing's roof have started to collapse.
History
In 1865, The university is founded under the name of "Boston Tech."
In 1916, the university is renamed to Massachusetts Institute of Technology

In 2110, the descendants of the university students and staff found The Institute underneath the ruins.
