The nuclear war that devastated the Earth
After hearing the bomb sirens and a frantic news report on TV, Aubrey and her family rush to Vault 111, having been registered as residents only an hour before. All three of them are placed in cryosleep less than an hour later.
In West Virginia, now part of The Appalachian Wasteland, Vault 76 opens, allowing its Residents to leave its confines and begin to reclaim the Wasteland. Among this group is Anthony "Tony" Wilson and his wife, Nicole, and his children: Diego and Tabitha Wilson.
A group of Institute personnel, led by Conrad Kellogg, break into Vault 111. They unfreeze the Vault inhabitants long enough to take the infant Shaun West from his father's arms, who is subsequently shot for attempting to fight back. Aubrey witnesses all of this, and is powerless to stop any of it as she's still locked in her cryopod. She is re-frozen and the Institute scientists leave the rest of the Vault inhabitants to die.
At Shaun West's insistence and curiosity, Aubrey's cryopod is reactivated, thawing her out and allowing her to emerge into the Commonwealth Wasteland exactly 210 years to the day and hour of her going into the Vault.
Under the influence of Dr. Justin Ayo in the SRB, Father authorizes a massive and simultaneous strike against all Minuteman settlements in The Commonwealth Wasteland.
