The Chief Chimp

All along the Apetarium, one Chimp always seems to stand out among the others. Normally it is distinguished by its off-colored eyes or fur, these apes can have many oddities. The current Chief has almost reddish fur and black eyes. However, it is far more than just cosmetics that separate them from their kin. Many have the features of different animals, such as feathers, a profound jaw, and in rare cases, a partial body of a reptile. These walk as though they're confused about how they should be moving, an unnatural combination of walking on two, and then four feet.
There have been many of these before, and many more will come to rule after these are gone. All this is done in search of a new, perfected species to serve the many races. Apes, the peak of the animal kind, were tested randomly. Failures, such as those which did not fully develop or were too unstable were discarded, and disposed of through secret means. Those who were accepted were allowed to serve under the Chief Chimp, and perhaps grow to take that role as their own. When their leader grows too old to rule, or another sees a weakness that they are able to exploit, the chief is challenged, and generally killed. There is no exile or surrender among their kind. No matter which the victor was, the stronger would live, thus there would always be a continual evolution.
The role of the Chief Chimp is not fully understood by most, especially the current Chief. With an intricate network of apes acting as spies, and a constant influx of magical weapons and items, the Chiefs continue to grow in power, and numbers. Eventually, there will come a day when a Chief desires more and will move against those whom they have gathered information on. There is an increasing amount of people who claim that they felt watched, and it is the intricate network of apes that is responsible.
