Perune of the Dark
Perune is the personification of all things Darkness.
He is born of the tear of Ta, during her greatest mistake and remorse. He is supposed to be the reminder to her, and to all of their followers, that there is a balance in the world, and that one must have both to truly appreciate and learn.
After all, how can you recognize the good and the light, without the example and experiences of the bad?
In the belief of the Three Divines, Perune is one half of the concept of Karmic Justice, and is depicted in many religious motifs as half of a balanced scale, the dark stag to Ukalie's light doe, the shadow of Ta, etc.
Because of this balance, and how he must enact his part of it, Perune doesn't see much light, or experience much happiness.
In his downtimes, Perune began to collect the souls of the evil, the abandoned, the unloved and the lonely... and he began to twist them, to give them new shapes and eventually...
new life. His creatures made of the shadows alone could only survive in Cirke during the night before disappearing in the daylight, but his creations could walk and talk; they could carry out his missives and allow him to enact more.... physical justice than before. The other two Divines thought this gave him too much power in the Balance, and so Ta judged they must have rules. Perune could have one follower of each of their Temples chosen to be Granted his Presence. And so each Divines temple has Three priest/ess(es), one to guide those with the divine missives of Perune, one with the love of Ukalie, and one of Judgement for wrongdoings through Ta. This way, Perune could still have followers walk during the day, and he was satisfied for a time. He kept experimenting in the basement, but was never really sated with his imperfect, twisted creations. His closest achievement were the Boohe, but unfortunately many of the population of Cirke could never even see them.
As she was and is and always will be his other half, he and Ukalie created a child together, Hekan. His blood was a mix of dark and light, and allowed him to do many unnatural, yet beautiful things. Perune and Hekan got along swimmingly. He was naturally gifted with both the dark and the light sides of their power, and could manipulate so much of the fabric of the universe, Ta began to grow suspicious of him. She felt he would one day overthrow them, and thusly cast him out of their plane, and into the mortal realms.
This outraged Perune, and he began to spend more time in the mortal world away from the other gods, with the humans of the world and most importantly, with his son. Some say this is the reason Hekan leans toward the darker sides of magic, some say it is also this time spent with his father that gives him any scrap of empathy at all. The time spent on Cirke changed Perune. He saw more and more of humanity and began to understand their antics, their choices, and why they make them. He began to understand the darkness in their hearts, and no longer felt so... compelled... to squash it. Sometimes... sometimes... he nudged them toward it. In the modern worship of the Divines, Perune is perceived as the representation of all things wrong, dark, evil itself. Which while not entirely incorrect, is not quite the truth either. But what religion is the same as its conception a hundred years later, let alone a thousand?
