Lumen Vigil

(I will add to this article as we discuss what you do and don't want from this campaign and as I brew on my own. For now, this article is complete)   The Lumen Vigil are a cast of guardians who take up arms against the forces of darkness by pledging their services to The First Star or her seven Brilliant Stars.

Pledge

All Lumen Vigil pledge themselves to the First Star or a Brilliant Star in order to become a Vigil. This means offering their service to the light for as long as they can reasonably fight the darkness. While a Lumen Vigil is not literally forced to fight the darkness, their soul may be reclaimed by the First Star if they outright refse to serve for long enough. Still, this requirement is lax, as many Vigil will refuse to fight unless the threat is cataclysmic.   With this pledge comes a longer lifespan as the First Star sustains their soul, and thus the Vigil will be able to fight for hundreds of years before growing old. There are some Vigil still around from the first few teams of Lumen Vigil ever formed; some look and act as spry as when they pledged, and others have withered from time and have retired long ago. Still, even at the end of their lives, a Lumen Vigil pledges to fight the forces of darkness however they can, and most meet their end on that field of battle (see Falling). Even those who became critically injured in the fight between light and darkness, such as losing a limb or otherwise becoming disabled, must attempt to fight the darkness somehow. This can mean as little as providing guidance to newer Lumen Vigil, participating in research against the darkness, or housing other Lumen Vigil, but efforts must be made to face the dark.

Powers

By pledging as a Lumen Vigil, a person offers a part of themselves to the First Star. In doing so, they place their soul in a Light Pendant that becomes bound to them. This pendant is responsible for their familiar (or steed), their longevity, and some (if not all) of their supernatural powers. Powers granted by the First Star or a Brilliant Star can manifest in an infinite number of ways; these powers are a reflection of the Vigil's soul, and thus the possibilities are endless. What remains constant is that these powers start off weak and limited and will grow alongside the Vigil as they face off against the darkness.

Teams

Lumen Vigil teams have historically been groups of seven, but over time this requirement has loosened and teams have been formed with more or less guardians than the standard as necessary; notably, duo and trio groups became more popular once the tradition loosened, and there have been teams with up to twelve guardians in one. Individuals pledging as one-man armies is the most rare, but it does still happen.   Teams are often led by the first Vigil who pledged, or the one who forms the group, but this is not always the case. Some teams are led by two people who share leadership, and some teams do not have a designated leader at all. Most teams, even with a declared leader, rely mostly on cooperation and agreement between members, thus the title of leader is more of a social responsibility than a dictative one.
