The Imperial Gods
The Empire worships hundreds, perhaps thousands, of different gods. The major gods rule over the usual broad conceptual domains found in other pantheons--things like war, death, and the harvest. The lesser gods have much more limited dominion, to the point where it often seems that there's an imperial god for every situation, no matter how specific.
Each imperial god maintains an avatar, an immortal vessel that represents them on the mortal plane. While avatars are unable to channel the full abilities of their celestial counterpart, they still wield incredible power and are directly connected to the godhead. Although the distinction between god and avatar is mostly pedantic, avatars are often referred to using a title or nickname that distinguishes them from the heavenly deity.
Most of the major gods hold positions in the imperial power structure and therefore spend most of their time in the court of The Eternal Empress, only venturing out to occasionally conduct official business or visit their temples in other cities. Lesser gods who hold largely ceremonial positions or are completely unburdened with imperial responsibility have more freedom to travel or reside where they please, and can therefore be found throughout the Empire.
Much of the day-to-day governance of the empire is handled by the half-mortal offspring of the gods . While their divine ancestry grants them immortality and usually other supernatural abilities, these demi-gods do not have a celestial counterpart, meaning that they can die through violence or misadventure just like regular mortals.
