The Tower of Daggers

Legend says that the Tower of Daggers was once the home of a powerful wizard, but that was so long ago that even the first inhabitant's name has been lost for centuries. By the time of the Dragon Pacts, the long-abandoned tower, which stood outside the city gates, had been re-purposed as the central keep and watchtower of the stronghold that served as a base for the scouts who patrolled the borders of lands claimed by Khezvaros.   Tower Hill was the site of the Empire's first (and most disastrous) attempt to bring Khezvaros under its sway. The Empire sent an army of 10,000 men to take the city. In addition to their primary weapons, each man carried a short sword made of Zeldarian Steel. These weapons were to be used for close fighting in the cramped city streets, with the Zeldarian Steel nullifying any magical protections provided by the dragons.   The legions never made it to the city. The dragons attacked near Tower Hill and when they were done, the only thing left of the Imperial Legionnaires were ash and 10,000 short swords made out of  the only metal impervious to dragonfire. After the battle, the Hadvezor ordered that the swords be collected and used to adorn a parapet that was added to the top of the guard tower. There's some disagreement among scholars as to whether downgrading the swords to daggers when renaming the tower was a simple mistranslation or an intentional choice meant to belittle the Empire.   The city has grown well past where the tower stands, and today the Tower of Daggers is used by the Empire as a garrison post and a prison for high-profile (often political) prisoners.
