Tomb Servants

Although the practice is less common than it once was, many of the prominent families of Khezvaros still employ tomb servants to protect their ancestral crypt and its inhabitants. Tomb Servants traditionally live in the crypt they care for, and in some cases they raise families there and pass the post down through the generations. More recently it's become acceptable for tomb servants to keep homes elsewhere in the city and only live in the tombs when necessary (such as following a death in the family or during the The Lord of Bones ' monthly procession).   Most of the time, Tomb Servants function primarily as caretakers. They keep the crypt clean and in good repair, take steps to protect them from grave robbers and vandals, assist family members visiting the tomb, and perform any rites or rituals required by religion or tradition. In some cases a single Tomb Servant may oversee several crypts belonging to an extended family, often with subordinates who handle many of the day-to-day duties. When a member of the family dies, the Tomb Servant is responsible for preparing the body for burial and overseeing (and sometimes officiating over) the funeral rites. Once the deceased is placed in the tomb, the Tomb Servant is charged with conducting rituals to convince the Griffons of Light to carry the soul to Argalak, the Weigher of Souls and protect it from The Lord of Bones.   Tomb Servants are well-versed in the lore surrounding death and the afterlife, both in general and as it pertains to the religious beliefs of the patron family. They must also know a number of magical rituals and some sigil magic in order to fulfill their duties and most have at least some combat training (to deal with the aforementioned grave robbers and vandals). Most are also familiar with the history of the patron family, especially if they grew up in the tomb and inherited the position.
