Crystalite Magic
humans are not innately magical creatures. bonding with one or more crystalites will usually give very minor elemental magical gifts (equivalent of a cantrip). for those who want to really develop their magical abilities, concentrated long-term work with a crystalite is required, and those who have that dedication and discipline are rare. the magical results are also very unpredictable - they are not logically proportionate with amount of effort or even apparent talent. humans who take this route are often those who are willing to let themselves crystalize as much as necessary, as their ongoing work with their crystalite(s) cannot be paused to let their bodies decrystalize occasionally.
crystalites themselves are innately magical, even when they become significantly more flesh-and-bones. a sky crystalite can conjure a brisk wind, a fire crystalite can light a candle, a flower crystalite can make a bud blossom, etc. for the crystalites that have multiple innate elements, they can usually (but not always) only use their ‘primary’ element’s cantrip-equivalent unless trained. few crystalites have greater innate power and skill than this basic level, however, and those that do are considered nearly deific and either sought out by hopeful companions or studiously avoided for safety. fel crystalites frequently have a higher-than-usual base level of magical power and can be more canny in how they use it.
as with any group, there are statistical outliers. some individual crystalites (regardless of their type’s rarity or “specialness”) have greater magical power than average, or have very uncommon kinds of elemental or non-elemental magical abilities. those are documented on a case-by-case basis and are highly, highly prized among both human scientists and would-be sorcerers.
