My parents, hardworking immigrants from Puerto Rico, instilled in me the values of perseverance and the importance of education. They encouraged my fascination with engineering and celebrated my early attempts at building small-scale bridges and structures in our garage. As I entered high school, their unwavering support paved the way for my enrolment in a prestigious engineering program at the City College of New York.
College was a demanding period of intense study and practical training, but it was also where my passion for civil engineering truly took root. The complexities of designing and constructing bridges, highways, and infrastructure excited me. I knew I had found my calling.
After completing my education, I ventured into the world of civil engineering, starting my career in New York City. The challenges were immense, from navigating demanding deadlines to working within tight budgets. But each obstacle served to strengthen my resolve and sharpen my problem-solving skills. I thrived on turning innovative ideas into tangible realities.
As the years passed, I had the privilege of working on some of the country's most iconic bridges. Whether it was overseeing the construction of a new suspension bridge or the rehabilitation of a historic truss bridge, I poured my heart and soul into each project. I couldn't help but marvel at the thought that these structures would outlive me, serving countless generations to come.
In my personal life, my greatest source of pride is my son, Nic. At 24, he shares my love for engineering and often accompanies me on weekend adventures. We explore historical bridges, discussing their engineering marvels and sharing a bond that only a common passion can foster. Nic's presence in my life has been a source of joy and inspiration, and I'm excited to see how he'll contribute to the world of civil engineering.
Outside of my engineering pursuits, I find solace in my lush garden, where I tend to a variety of exotic plants and flowers. Gardening is my therapeutic escape from the hustle and bustle of the construction world, allowing me to reconnect with nature and find moments of tranquility amidst the chaos of my professional life.
Health and fitness are paramount in my life. I prioritise regular exercise and maintain an active lifestyle. Mountain biking is a particular passion of mine, and the thrill of conquering challenging trails never fails to exhilarate me. Hiking is another of my outdoor interests, taking me to some of the most rugged terrains and connecting me with the natural world.
Through it all, my family has been my unwavering pillar of support. My parents' sacrifices and encouragement allowed me to pursue my dreams, and Nic's shared enthusiasm in the world of engineering brings us even closer.
