Daniel Kim
My name is Daniel Kim, and I'd like to share with you the story of my life's journey, woven through the art of light and the enchantment of cardistry. It's a tale that begins in the vibrant city of New York.
Growing up in the heart of the Big Apple was an experience that shaped me in profound ways. The towering skyscrapers and dazzling lights of Times Square inspired my fascination with the interplay of illumination and architecture. I would often visit Broadway with my family to watch awe-inspiring shows, and the magical quality of stage lighting left a lasting impression on my young mind.
As a child, I was a natural-born problem solver. My parents, both engineers themselves, encouraged my curious nature. They allowed me to disassemble and reassemble household gadgets, which undoubtedly set the stage for my future career as an electrical engineer. We lived in a cozy brownstone in Brooklyn, and my father's well-equipped workshop in the basement became my playground.
My interest in lighting design was nurtured further during my high school years. I was drawn to theatre, where I had the opportunity to work on lighting rigs for school productions. The thrill of orchestrating light to set the stage mood was exhilarating.
It was during my college years at MIT that I honed my electrical engineering skills. The bustling atmosphere of Cambridge and the intellectual vigour of the institution inspired me to excel in my field. I delved into the intricacies of lumens and lux, learning to create lighting systems that were not just functional but also aesthetically pleasing.
After graduation, I moved back to New York City, working for a prestigious lighting design firm. The city's vibrancy and architectural diversity offered me a constant source of inspiration. Through my career, I have had the privilege of lighting up museums, galleries, and iconic buildings across the city, allowing me to create visual stories through the medium of light.
In my free time, I turn to cardistry, a hobby that allows me to express myself in a different way. Cardistry is like a choreographed dance with a deck of cards, and it is my way of adding a touch of magic to life. My nimble fingers bring the cards to life in mesmerising patterns, turning them into an ever-changing canvas of fluid motion and illusion.
Of course, life has presented its share of challenges, from tight deadlines to the ever-constant balancing act between work and personal life. It's in these intricate challenges that I find my motivation. They drive me to innovate and find new ways to create beauty through illumination and the art of cardistry.
My family, my pillar of strength, has been with me throughout this journey. My wife, Jennifer, shares my love for art and design, and our shared passions have created a loving home for our three children, Oliver, Emily, and Mia. Their youthful energy keeps me grounded and inspired.
As I navigate this ever-shifting journey, I continue to find wonder in the play of light and the poetry of motion. Each day is a new shuffle of life's deck, and I welcome it with an open heart, ready to create and embrace whatever patterns and illusions it may bring.
