I am Felicity Massey, a police officer with the Broken Hill Police. I was born and raised in the bustling city of Sydney, but fate took me to the rural outpost of Broken Hill, where I serve as a police officer. My brief time spent at training in the inner-west of Sydney had taught me the importance of maintaining a professional demeanour, even in the face of hostility. My determination to succeed, combined with my strong work ethic, has earned me the respect of my colleagues and the trust of the community I serve.
I remember the day that Claire Smith walked into the small station. It was just me and Sal on duty, and Sal was on a lunch break. Claire was in a state, claiming that her husband, Paul, was ignoring her. She was blunt and rude, but I remained professional, trying to understand what was going on. She spoke of her husband's mother, who lived in Adelaide and was a known liar, and her fears that Paul may take their children away from her. I felt a tight knot in the pit of my stomach, a feeling I've learned to pay close attention to. I searched Paul's name in the database and discovered a long history of documented incidents and call-outs.
Claire handed me a post-it note with the name Greta, Paul's mother, and a phone number, instructing me to call her and find out if she was covering for her son. I felt a sense of unease, but I also felt a strong desire to help Claire and solve this mystery. As I continued to investigate, I discovered that Claire and Paul had had an argument a few nights before. Claire was leaving for Brisbane the next day to visit her sister, taking the kids with her for their protection.
I was torn between my duty to protect the community and my deep-seated desire to help those in need. I knew that Claire was within her legal rights to take her children to visit her sister, but I also felt a strong urge to find Paul and make sure that everything was okay. I promised Claire that I would look into it and do my best to find her husband. The sense of responsibility I felt towards this case stayed with me, fuelling my determination to uncover the truth.
Being a police officer in a rural outpost can be challenging, but it has also been the most rewarding experience of my life. I take pride in serving my community and making a difference in the lives of those I serve. Despite the difficulties, I wouldn't trade my job for anything in the world.
