My family was my rock, and they were the ones who encouraged me to explore my diverse interests. My parents, who had a deep appreciation for the arts and history, nurtured my fascination with antique globes from a young age. I remember my father telling me tales of great explorers like Magellan and Columbus while I gazed in wonder at the antique globe he kept in his study. That's when my love for these captivating spheres began, and I knew I had to collect them.
Santa Cruz, with its rugged coastline and towering redwoods, was the ideal backdrop for my outdoor adventures. As a child, I spent my weekends exploring the beaches, climbing trees, and helping my father with various DIY projects around the house. It was during these formative years that I developed a strong work ethic and a love for constructing things with my own two hands.
In high school, my friends and I joined a local carpentry club, and that's where I got my first taste of construction. The experience was transformative. I realised that building things had always been my passion. From then on, I knew I wanted to work in the construction industry.
After graduating from Santa Cruz High School, I decided to pursue a degree in Construction Management at California State University, Chico. The serene, tree-lined campus was a far cry from the rugged beauty of Santa Cruz, but it was a necessary step on my journey to becoming a construction subcontractor. Those years were a whirlwind of late-night study sessions, construction site visits, and of course, globe hunting on the weekends.
It was during my time at Chico that I stumbled upon an antique shop that would change the course of my life. In a dusty corner, I found a 17th-century globe, beautifully handcrafted and exquisitely detailed. I couldn't believe my luck. This discovery reignited my passion for antique globes, and I began dedicating my weekends to hunting down these hidden treasures. My collection started to grow, with each globe telling its own unique story of exploration and cartography.
Upon graduating, I moved to San Francisco to start my career in construction. The city's iconic skyline and thriving construction scene offered the perfect environment for me to thrive. I worked as a subcontractor for several firms, contributing to a range of projects, from towering skyscrapers to historical renovations. The satisfaction of seeing architectural concepts become physical reality was my daily motivation.
Balancing the heavy machinery of construction with the delicate craftsmanship of globe collecting was no small feat. It required impeccable time management, organisational skills, and a keen eye for detail. Some of the antique globes I've found date back centuries, each with its own unique history and charm. My evenings were often spent meticulously restoring and preserving these gems.
As my career progressed, I discovered the need for balance in my life. The construction world can be chaotic and demanding, so I turned to yoga to find my sanctuary. The quiet moments of stretching and deep breathing allowed me to rediscover my centre and prepare for the dynamic challenges of the construction site.
In the midst of all this, I adopted a curious rescue cat, whom I named Whiskers. She brought a touch of humour and spontaneity to my otherwise structured life. Whiskers often "helped" me examine new additions to my globe collection with her playfulness. Her antics reminded me that life should be filled with laughter and adventure, no matter how serious the construction site may be.
And that's how I became Gordan Adamson, a 26-year-old Construction Subcontractor with a penchant for antique globes, yoga, and feline shenanigans. My journey is a colourful and ever-evolving one, and I wouldn't have it any other way. From the shores of Santa Cruz to the bustling streets of San Francisco, my life has been a blend of hard work, passion, and exploration, just like the antique globes I hold dear.
