Justin Evans
I'm Justin Evans, a 20-year-old Construction Subcontractor with a penchant for the unconventional. While most folks my age are still trying to figure out their path, I've embraced two very distinct worlds.
I was born in the small coastal town of Monterey, California, nestled between the rugged cliffs and the sparkling sea. My family's roots in the construction industry run deep. My grandfather was a skilled carpenter, and my dad, Grant, followed in his footsteps. I remember as a child, running around construction sites, fascinated by the heavy machinery, the smell of freshly sawn wood, and the rhythmic pounding of hammers. Those early memories left an indelible mark on me, and I knew that I, too, would carry on the family legacy.
My mother, Polly, on the other hand, had a different passion. She had always dreamed of owning a vineyard and crafting exceptional wines. When I was just a toddler, my parents decided to pursue her dream. They found a picturesque plot of land in the lush Carmel Valley, where the soil and climate were perfect for grape cultivation. They planted their first vines and nurtured them as if they were their own children. And I, their real child, grew up surrounded by rows of grapevines.
As I played in the vineyard, I began to understand the art and science of winemaking. My parents patiently shared their knowledge with me, teaching me about different grape varietals, the intricacies of the fermentation process, and the importance of timing and patience in the world of wine. It was in those sun-drenched vineyards that my love for winemaking was born.
But I couldn't ignore the call of the construction site. In my teenage years, I started helping out with my dad's construction projects during the summers. I learned the ins and outs of the trade, from laying foundations to framing walls and everything in between. The satisfaction of transforming blueprints into physical structures was immensely gratifying, and I felt a deep connection to my family's legacy.
As I approached adulthood, the inevitable question arose: which path would I choose? Construction or winemaking? It was a decision that weighed heavily on me, but I soon realised that I didn't have to choose. My friends often joked that I was a "builder by day and vintner by night," and it was the truth.
Juggling these two worlds might sound challenging, but it's incredibly fulfilling. The precision of construction merges with the creativity of winemaking in my life. I'd work on a construction site, donning a hardhat and coordinating teams, and then, as the sun set, I'd find myself in the vineyard, tending to the vines, experimenting with different grape varietals, and overseeing the winemaking process. It was a balancing act that I'd perfected over the years.
I couldn't resist the urge to blend these two passions. I started my own private label wine, combining the craftsmanship I'd learned in construction with the artistry of winemaking. My "Builder's Blend" garnered recognition and even won a few local awards. The unique combination of these two worlds had become my signature, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
I'm a strong advocate for pursuing what sets your soul on fire, and my unique blend of construction and winemaking is my way of doing just that. Who knows where this combination will lead me in the future, but I'm excited to find out. Whether it's constructing towering buildings or crafting exquisite wines, I'm determined to leave my mark on both worlds, just as my family has done for generations.
