Oil Jar
by hughpierre
An oil jar contains an active, but slow, chemical reaction that is primarily used to countdown the amount of time a traveler has to survive in the cold wilds before freezing to death.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Chemical Colour Changes
The oil jar acts as a chemical pendulum oscillating between four colours: green, blue, violet and then red. There are several transitory colours: burnt orange, yellow or transparent that can appear as spiral waves of colour that grow as they move through the liquid at a constant speed. Travelers would regularly open and close the jar lid to monitor the colour changes in the jar and thus determine their safe margin within theit schedule.Colour | Remaining Time |
---|---|
Green | 8 hrs |
Yellow Waves | 6 hrs |
Blue | 4 hrs |
White Circles | 2 hrs |
Violet | 1 hr |
Orange Patterns | 30 mins |
Red | 15 mins |
Significance
Time Keeping
This mechanism is used in conjunction with the effects of cold cream in order to traverse bitingly cold environments.
Anyone traveling the reed roads need to layer antifreeze cream over themselves before heading out. The chemical countdown is to assure them of the time they have before the cold cream loses its effect.
