Red Company
The Red company was formed out of several smaller mercenary units by the Council of Twelve. This was done secretly as the group was preparing a coup to seize control of the city state of Skarleen on the eastern side of the Windy Sea.
Composition
Manpower
The Red Company consisting of roughly 500 soldiers. The company has about 100 cavalry troopers and 400 infantry divided into four companies.
Weaponry
The company members wear red enameled armor. They fight with a variety of weapons Most soldiers use a crossbow or a short bow. They carry swords, axes, maces and spears as their melee weapons.
Tactics
The company practices small unit assaults on buildings including one assisted by the mages of the Council of Twelve. Tight defensive formations and counterattacks on wall breaches towers/gatehouses that have fallen to an attacking enemy. Typically half of a company will provide supporting missiles fire while the other half engages in hand-to-hand combat.
Training
The company is very well-trained and the relatively high pay helps retain is man power. The company primarily focuses on the task of defending the city from attack and maintaining security within the city. Each company breaks down into five 20 man squads that are under the command of a Lieutenant. This squads practice tasks such as storming buildings, defending walls and gates. The cavalry tends to concentrate on patrolling and skirmishing.

The company generally plans to stay close to its base of supply and arsenal in Skarleen.
Upkeep
The unit is paid in silver from the city treasury on a monthly bases.
Recruitment
The company recruits soldiers from outside of Skarleen, it does not accept recruits from within the city state fearing that thye might aid in some sort of rebellion against the authority of the Flames.
History
The company was formed from a half a dozen small formations of mercenary soldier with the promise of big rewards for seizing the city of Skarleen. The company was smuggled into the city on merchants ships or in small groups from the countryside. On a prearranged signal, the mercenaries and the Flames (a group of fire mages who had hired the mercenaries) went into action seizing the city gates, arsenal and slaughtering the city's ruling council. Instead of looting ,the Flames used the company to launch as systematic campaign of extortion against the leading merchant families of the city. This money was used both to pay the mercenaries a handsome reward for their efforts and enrich the Flames. After this the company settled down into a permanent occupation. Periodically the company carries out ruthless purges against anyone who might be preparing to oppose the Flames..
