The Underhill Clan
The Underhill Clan – A criminal organization originating in Karmis, but has since spread to many of the cities around the Windy Sea. The Clan is made up of professional thieves and smugglers. The Clan is led by two shadowy figures simply known as “Father” and “Mother.” Each city is in turn led by a figure known as “Big Brother” or “Big Sister.” The Clan’s usual mode of operation is to steal especially from the upper classes and often tries to grab valuable magic items and artifacts. They will use their smuggling network to move highly identifiable items from the city where it was stolen to another one of local operations where it can be fenced. Those members of the clan who survive long enough to retire use their loots to set themselves up as legitimate merchants, but usually retain their association with the Clan often aiding in its smuggling operations. The Clan makes it a point to stay out of religion and politics beyond cultivating corrupt officials who might help them in their endeavors or allow them to elude justice. They are happy to collect compromising information on the rich and powerful so they can manipulate these individuals when it suits them. The will use their official contacts to undermine competing criminal organizations.
The recruitment process for the Clan works in a number of different ways. One method is for members of the Clan to recruit their friends and relatives. Some families have been involved with the clan for generations. They also keep their eyes open for promising criminal talent. If an individual is seen as a likely candidate, he or she is invited to join. Those who refuse multiple invitations are likely to suffer and unfortunate example or have their crimes revealed to interested officials.
The Clan has a well-organized financial pecking order. Members are expected to report all their gains to their Big Brother or Big Sister. They give half to the Big sibling and keep half. In turn the Big Sibling remits half his or her share to “Father” and “Mother.” The hierarchy does not actually pocket all of this money. Some of the money is used for bribing corrupt officials, paying for expenses for complicated jobs and providing a social welfare network for the families of Clan members who have been imprisoned or killed.
Members who betray the Clan or leave without permission of the hierarchy will be pursued to great lengths. When they are caught up with simple killing is not deemed sufficient punishment. Torture, humiliation and slow death are considered important parts of the program. While this work might be done by regular members of the Clan, several highly feared and very skilled enforcers are used by the Clan to carry out this work.
