Xeros, the Living Idol
One hundred years ago a greenish light appeared in the sky above the forested hills of northern Wallen. The next day local peasants found a large crater with a curious green liquid inside. What happened over the next few weeks is unclear, but somehow the peasants were convinced to start building the foundations of a large circular building around the crater. Curious travelers came to visit the site of this new building and many stayed on to help in its construction. At this point a group of peasants from a village near the crater declared themselves to be the priests and priestesses of the God Who Has Come to the Land, also called Xeros. Xeros was supposedly embodied in a huge statue that the God’s worshipers had begun to build inside the temple.
According to the priests of the new religion those who served the god received great powers. With the aid of strange green amulets, the priests healed the sick and generally bettered life for the villagers. In exchange they asked for gifts of livestock and condemned criminals which were brought to the idol for sacrifice. The priests raised money to continue the construction by occasionally selling magic items in the northern cities. Within five years of the God’s landing the massive, circular temple was completed. For many years the area around the temple remained quiet with a few thousand peasants continuing the worship of their god.
In recent years Xeros has shown ambitions about increasing its power. The living idol has commanded its followers to build more temples and increase the number of sacrifices. As a result of these demands, the cult has been aggressively fundraising and kidnapping numerous victims for sacrifice.
