Rigel

Rigel is thought to be a cursed system. The planet that share's the star's name is habitable, indeed, it is an earth-like garden world that once had dozens of major cities - but it has fallen to the dark between the stars. Not long before the Zenethians arrived, a Portal Builder artifact on Rigel was destroyed. Stories vary on how this was done, but the impact is unmistakable. Creatures of the Dark have ravaged the planet, some as large as a skyscraper. And in space, things are worse. There are frequent plasma storms, and when those storms cause a halo around Deneb - the brightest star in the sky, beyond the system's own sun, a mystical blindness can affect ship's crews.
Now, the only permanent residents in the system are the Zarrarran Corsairs. Madmen and mystics, the Corsairs survive by braving the surface of Rigel and attacking ships that travel to Dabaran. The ships of the Corsair fleet are ancient, and many engineers say that they should be falling apart based on the sensor readings they get from them. Others say that the Corsairs are just one more manifestation of the Dark, and are in fact long dead - ghost ships continuing to attack the living even after they fell victim to Rigel's curse.
