Taoan
The Taoan system has long been a center of activity in the Third Horizon. It was the site of the last battle of the Portal Wars, and for a time it was both the location of the colony of Karpad and the location of the Taoan gas mines. But now, it is also the staging area for the Factionary Blockade. Largely made of the Legion Third Fleet, but supported by numerous other Zenethian vessels, the blockade both contains the rebels from the neighboring Uharu system, and is the staging area for the ongoing war in that system.
THE PORTAL WARS
The original conflict that went on to become the Portal Wars was centered around whether the Third Horizon should be allowed independence or if it should be co-ruled by the First Horizon. As the war intensified, the original question was sidelined and many other conflicts that had been simmering in the shadows instead took its place. By proxy, the First and Second Horizon also fought each other during the Portal Wars. The titanic weapons used in the war destroyed many of the portals linking the three Horizons together. The portals between the First and Third Horizon were hit the hardest, but also some of the portals connecting different systems within the Third Horizon. The last contact with the First Horizon was intentionally severed by the Order of the Pariah as the last of the Empire’s forces were crushed, and several portals and mystical nodes had been destroyed before that. The Taoan system contains portals to Hamura and Uharu, and a dead portal leading to the First Horizon – or rather, a portal the people of the Third Horizon believe to be dead. KARPAD
The Boroi clan has long overseen the Taoan gas mine at Karpad, but the outbreak of a virulent and fatal disease known as Ghazali's Doom and a number of mysterious disappearances have left the people of the colony paranoid and fearful. Some say that Ghazali's Doom is connected to the rise of Mystics, and others say it is influenced by a recently discovered Portal Builder ruin - but the truth is not yet known. METAPLOT NOTE
The Taoan system is deeply involved in the Coriolis campaign "Emissary Lost". So far, part 1 of 3 of that campaign is published. I may someday do something with it, but for now, I'm not having the events in the Taoan system having happened yet in our Coriolis. Hence you may notice differences between descriptions of the Taoan system here and in the core rulebook. That's intentional, and for this campaign, consider what's written here to be correct. If the events of "Emissary Lost" begin happening, I'll update this entry accordingly.

The Factionary Blockade is one of the largest fleets in the Third Horizon outside of the Kua system.
