The Scorched Lands

Once a densely populated continent of mountain and pastureland, the Scorched Lands were destroyed in an apocalyptic catastrophe of unknown origin. Now, all sorts of flora and flora are emerging from beneath the ash and dust and for the first time, the Dwarves are turning their attention North to reclaim their fell kingdom and lose their dependence on the twin worlds of elves and men.

Geography

The continent is a long landmass extending east to west. The south-eastern to southern border has a large mountainous range. Much of the continent is rolling hills and plains with scattered forests around the sites where decent rainfall meets fertile soil. From a climate perspective, the region is filled with cool plains, cold forests, and big fjords.   The layer of ash left behind by the Rending of the Sky has been quickly eroded by rain and winds and flushed into the ocean, but has fertilized some soil that previously had little to no nutritional value, encouraging the growth of new plants and grasses

Fauna & Flora

During the annihilation of the landscape, a large amount of animal life was killed. However, many survived in safe spaces, such as caves, sacred groves, and the dwarven cities. However, many of the larger creatures were unable to find enough food to survive in the harsh landscape.   Many animals that can be found in the harsher regions are snakes, lizards, and other cold-blooded animals. Also in the area are birds that have migrated from other continents to hunt their increasing population. In other areas, marsupials, boars, wild cats, and even some bears may be common.   Many formerly farmed crops are now growing wild and free across the fertile plains. Hemp, which was introduced by the Elves into the region soon before the Rending of the Sky, is now spreading out of control through some regions as an unmonitored invasive species and poses a serious threat to many native flora if left unchecked.

Natural Resources

The native pines of this region contain a resilient yet mildly flexible wood type that grows fast and in extreme conditions.   Grains and vegetables once farmed in this region by the near extinct race of catfolk. Now, some of their species grow wild in a patchy and irregular state.   The dwarven mines collapsed and buried beneath the continent include mines for various metals such as copper, iron, mercury, silver, gold, and the mythical lost mines of orichalcum.

Very interesting how the apocalyptic event changed the environment and even more how nature is reacting to it!
