The Sacred Oak

The Sacred Oak is an oak that grows in a grove and they are protected by the Druid Order of Corrigenda. Though oaks grow throughout the world the oaks which form natural circles with clearings inside are off-limits to any woodcutter or crafter and thus are for the sole use of the Order. They are protected by deadly magical spells.

Properties

Material Characteristics

There are three different types of Sacred Oaks to be found in Corrigenda, the White, Black and Red, with their names giving the colour of their bark and heartwood. Each oak varies in wood strength and thickness of the bark. All oaks have an average height of 25 to 30 feet, but all are to be found in the groves of the Druids of Corrigen.

Physical & Chemical Properties

The Oaktree has many uses, from construction to sacred rights, ink creation and cleansing rituals.   The black Oak is used for inks and crafting. The heartwood is desired for the creation of a Druids walking staff. The wood of the Black Oak is also highly sought out for use in construction as lynchpins for stability in large architectural structures and shipbuilding.   The White Sacred Oak is used for most wooden construction, though it has to be properly aged and seasoned before use. The smaller branches are pulped and mixed with aspen and birch in the manufacturing of paper.   The Red Oak is highly sought after for medicinal purposes. The bark and leaves are combined to create smudge sticks to drive pests out of the house. The wood of the Red Oak is highly revered for inlays in fine carpentry.

Geology & Geography

Most oaks are found in temperate zones across the world of Corrigenda. Red Oaks however, prefer higher, colder elevations which explains the thicker bark.   White Oak is farmed and cultivated specifically for those who desire it.

History & Usage

Refinement

The harvesting and preparation of the Oaks are needed in order to get the most out of each tree. Druid staves are oiled and then pressed with a small copper rod, until the rod starts warping from the density of the heartwood.

Reusability & Recycling

Oak is recyclable and is typically converted to firewood, mulch, or processed into paper.
