Bellari

Countess Bellari is the ruler of Mons Mirror and an adversary of the Firefly Society. A powerful and sadistic monarch, she is collecting and hoarding artifacts for reasons unknown, and has virtually unlimited resources at her disposal.

Rule of Mons Mirror

Until a few years ago, Bellari was viscountess with a rising star thanks to her membership in an elite group of tastemakers known as the Mons Mirroti. She assumed control of the twin moons when a curse befell its former count, Phineas, causing him to lose all his possessions.   Despite her infulence, wealth, and fame, Countess Bellari had no lineage to speak of, although some suspect she may have blood ties to some powerful Homyn family she keeps secret. Few, however, have had opportunity to ask the countess about her past. Despite her omnipotent presence throughout Homyn culture she is surprisingly reclusive. Those who have had the privilege of receiving an invitation to her castle have reported that her social gatherings are intimate, sparsely populated affairs. Even among these few confidants, she reveals little about her inner life save for an intense interest in ancient artifacts.   Most of the management of Mons Mirror she leaves to her majordomo, a portly bald homyn with a monotone affect that seems to be constantly having a dozen psychic conversations using an orikori. She is content to let the moon's viscounts and viscountesses compete for her approval while she watches on from on high in her secluded castle.

A Taste for Ancient Things

While keeping her governing duties distant and laissez faire, Bellari spends most of her time indulging in her true passion of collecting ancient artifacts. Upon entering Mons Mirror she began taking orphans into her castle and training them to become scholars and Corsairs so they can add to her personal collection. Personal being the operative word, as Bellari is rarely keen to share her findings, instead hording the wonders of a past like a dragon hordes gold.   She also seeks out and imprisons people afflicted with the Fey Sullied, people who have in some way sensed a cursed part of the Dream World that can see into an objects past using that sense. Her prized possession is a fey-sullied woman named Melphina, who can read an objects history by touching it. She brings her charge to the bone market in Lion City, charging to identify artifacts, and using her to scout for the next acquisition.

Conflict with the Firefly Society

She came into conflict with one of her protoges, an archeologist turned Corsair named Anderson Lake. He believed that history and the artifacts it contains belong to the people and founded an organization called the Firefly Society to unite corsairs and scholars of history together to find and study ancient artifacts.   Lake had a more personal reason for opposing his former mentor, as he had come to love the imprisoned Fey Sullied, Melfina. As his influence grew, he hatched a plan to steal the imprisoned girl away from Bellari and use her powers to reveal history's secrets for all to enjoy.   Bellari first came into direct conflict with the Firefly Society when they hired the Party to retrieve a datacache from an Erryl satellite in Source's Orbit called the Straylight Lightouse. Bellari sent a clan of Ninja she had on retainer to retrieve it but saw her plans foiled by the Corsairs.   More recently, the Party liberated an Erryl tower from the Scalfi that propogated a wireless information transmitting service called the Network. They left a Scalfi scholar, Byron, there to continue to study it. However, after the Corsairs got the data they needed, Bellari used her position to enter the tower and murdered Byron in cold blood.
