Daemons

Beings who exist solely within The Dream World unfixed to physical bodies are known as daemons to many residents of the spheres. Not even the most skilled warlocks know exactly what they are or if they even share a single set of definitive characteristics. While daemons rarely prove to be the malevolent deities that superstitious zealots make them out to be, their attitudes toward those living the waking world tend to fall somewhere on a spectrum from disinterest to mischievous cruelty. Very rarely will a daemon assist a dreamer without something in return, and even then they have a reputation for finding ways to make the beneficiaries of their services worse off.   Daemons are as varied in their characteristics as creatures in the Waking World. Some are sapient while others act with only animalistic intelligence. However, on an individual basis, daemons are often less complex than residents of the Waking World. Most daemons' personalities and goals are wholly shaped by the demi-plane they originated from, often exhibiting single-track minds and one dimensional personalities as embodiments of concepts like sorrow, joy, or rage. Some, more powerful daemons, seem to be possessed of self-determination, but even they are often reticent to change their stripes.   Most adventurers encounter daemons projecting their forms into the astral plane, much in the same way that warlocks and oneironauts can porject their own astral forms in The Dream World. Daemons visiting the waking world in this way cannot be harmed by ordinary weapons, and require either the use of astral powers or silver weapons to harm.   However, daemons primarily reside in The Dream World. The various demi-planes across The Dream World house entire ecologies and settlements populated by daemons. The vast majority of daemon species, in fact, never visit the Waking World, only ever interacting with the residents of the spheres through indirect impact on their dreams.
