Erradan

Erradan is the capital of the Erdannian Empire, and is the largest city in the world. It is a port city, upon the White Harbour, a natural harbour within the White Bay, and therefore is central to the world's trade.   As the political, economic, and industrial heart of the Erdannian Empire, Erradan is a highly important city, and a meeting place for some of the most important people in the world. The city is known for its intense economic class divide, containing the richest of the rich, and the poorest of the poor. It is also known for prolific criminal activity, insidious corruption in politics, and a variety of secret societies, factions, and espionage groups, with various agendas.   Erradan is a sprawling and industrious city, centred around the mouths of two rivers; the Westwyrm and the Eastwyrm. A section of the city sunk and became flooded during the Great Worldshaking of 20.19, turning many of its old streets into canals and waterways. These canals have been expanded, and now spread across most of the city.

Demographics

Ethnic Distribution

Erradan is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, mostly due to intense immigration during the Industrial boom. Folk from the rural parts of Tyrrus, and from less technologically advanced civilisations, come to Erradan for the modern comforts and varied job opportunities it provides. The most reliable surveys estimate that roughly 1/4 of the population have heritage from outside of the Erdannian Empire. Roughly two-thirds of this immigrant population are from the other nations of Tyrrus; New Haven, Whytehold, and Thassalia. About a sixth come from Hirokir, and most of the rest originate from the Three Dynasties of Shavhan, the Calamaran Empire, or Izir.

Species Distribution

Erradan's population of non-humans is best described as "intermediate" on the world stage. The city tends to have a tolerance for immigrants of all kinds (as long as they can work), leading to a decent number of non-humans coming to the city. However it does not particularly celebrate any varieties of non-humans (e.g. in the way New Haven celebrates Dragonkin) and does not have any policies protecting them from discrimination, leading to the city being generally considered unsafe for non-humans. Despite this, Elf-bloods are known to often emigrate to the city, usually after they are forced out of their homes when industry comes along and chops down their forests. They are not common by any means, but they form the largest non-human group in the city. The second largest would be Dragonkin, and there is a miniscule population of Cambions and Denizens in the city. Cambions in particular are often on the receiving end of persecution by the Tower or the Church of the Light, and as such rarely show themselves.

Magical Distribution

Erradan is a city which prioritises Industry and Technology over magic, nevertheless the Empire will never ignore a tool which could bring it power, and as such there are several organisations which deal with the control and education of magic, the most prominent being The Tower. Additionally, several of Erradan's academies and education programs will offer courses in magic for those who are interested. Despite this, they tend to be quite exclusive; magic is seen as a weapon or a tool, which requires careful distribution, rather than being a way of life like it is in other cultures. As a result of this, the section of Erradan's population who possess magical power is considered to be less than 1%, and less than half of those are trained mages.

Clockwork Distribution

Erradan is one of the only cities in the world to possess a sizeable population of Clockwork Golems, most of which are produced in the city, or in its neighbour Varawyn. Most of these Clockworks exist to serve a purpose for humanity, as servants, labourers, and soldiers. As of the last estimate, there are approximately 210,000 Clockwork Golems in the city of Erradan. Of those, only roughly 3,500 are free citizens, the rest being indentured to servitude to pay off the cost of their creation.

Government

The Ministry

The primary governing agency of Erradan, and therefore of the Erdannian Empire as a whole, is the Ministry. The Ministry is a (supposedly) democratic parliament, with Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary control over the Empire, and Municipal control over the city of Erradan. The institution also comprises the various "Merchant Houses" of Erradan, who regulate trade and hold monopolies over the distribution of certain goods.   The leaders of the ministry are known as the High Ministers, and they each are in charge of a certain ministerial function, or are a Merchant House Head.   The head of the Ministry is traditionally the Grand Minister, however, under the current State of Emergency, supreme power has been given to the War Minister, Circe Rosenclair.

Infrastructure

Erradan has one of the most advanced service infrastructures in the world, with almost universal access to electricity, gas, fresh water, and public transport across the entire city. However, the process of building such an extensive network in such a short time has meant that there are many flaws and faults in the system, and poorer areas are often left deprived of these services for a while.

Districts

The Crown Isles

Governing District   The Crown Isles are where the Erdannian Empire is ruled from, containing the central Ministry building, the Royal Palace, the Embassies, the Banks, and the Central Shipping and Trade Administration. Almost every function of the government can be found here, and the majority of people living here are government officials, ministers, bankers, and administrators. The Crown Isles are split from the rest of Erradan, sitting between the two rivers and extending out into the harbour. Some of this separation is artificial, having been split from the mainland due to the construction of large canals. There are seven landmasses which are part of the Crown Isles.   Castle Isle - Castle Erradan The Castle Isle is comprised of Castle Erradan, an ancient castle for which the city is named after. The castle's walls are tall, and completely surrounded by water. Within the walls is the luxurious Dragoncrest Palace, and the resplendent Castle Grounds. This is the residence of Queen Monica I, and is heavily protected.   Varren's Isle Varren's Isle, named after the first king of the Dragoncrest royal line, is connected to Castle Erradan and Guildcourt, and is one of the most prestigious neighbourhoods in Erradan. It contains the magnificent Dragoncrest Plaza.
